چکیده

Pattern formation driven by the spontaneous evaporation of sessile drops of methanol, ethanol, and FC-72 using infrared thermography is observed and, in certain cases, interpreted in terms of hydrothermal waves. Both methanol and ethanol drops exhibit thermal wave trains, whose wave number depends strongly on the liquid volatililty and substrate thermal conductivity. The FC-72 drops develop cellular structures whose size is proportional to the local thickness. Prior to this work, hydrothermal waves have been observed in the absence of evaporation in shallow liquid layers subjected to an imposed temperature gradient. In contrast, here both the temperature gradients and the drop thickness vary spatially and temporally and are a natural consequence of the evaporation process. © 2008 American Institute of Physics. Convective rolls and hydrothermal waves in evaporating sessile drops.

Recent experiments on the evaporation of sessile droplets have revealed the spontaneous formation of various patterns including the presence of hydrothermal waves. These waves had previously been observed, in the absence of evaporation, in thin liquid layers subjected to an imposed, uniform temperature gradient. This is in contrast to the evaporating droplet case wherein these gradients arise n...

Shaken not stirred –On internal flow patterns in oscillating sessile drops

We use numerical (volume of fluid) simulations to study the flow in an oscillating sessile drop immersed in an ambient immiscible fluid. The drop is excited by a sinusoidal variation of the contact angle at variable frequency. We identify the eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes of the drops and analyze the internal flow fields by following the trajectories of tracer particles. The flow fields displ...

Footprint geometry and sessile drop resonance.

In this work, we examine experimentally the resonance of a sessile drop with a square footprint (square drop) on a flat plate. Two families of modal behaviors are reported. One family is identified with the modes of sessile drops with circular footprints (circular drop), denoted as "spherical modes." The other family is associated with Faraday waves on a square liquid bath (square Faraday waves...

Sessile and Pendant Micro-Liter Drops Evaporate at Different Rates: An Experimental Approach

Evaporation of micro-liter drops from solid surfaces at room condition is mainly governed by diffusion. Therefore, there should be no difference between evaporation rate of sessile and pendant drops. However, some studies indicate a difference and explain the difference using buoyancy. The objective here is to reconcile the inconsistency in the literature. For that, first, by comparing two iden...

On Modeling Evaporation of Sessile Drops

Evaporating drops and thin films have numerous applications, from nanometric photoresist films in semiconductor applications to small sessile drops used for analysis of DNA microarrays [1]. Evaporating sessile drops are particularly interesting due to nonuniform drop thickness and the presence of contact lines (separating liquid, gas and solid phase). These factors may lead to nonuniform evapor...
